Percentage Grade

A standardized mathematical score representing the proportion of correct points earned out of total points possible, scaled to a baseline of 100 percent.

Definition & Pedagogical Application

A percentage grade expresses student performance on an assessment as a relative ratio on a 100-point continuum. Calculated using the formula (Points Earned รท Total Points Possible) ร— 100, percentage grades normalize assessments of wildly different lengthsโ€”such as a 10-question vocabulary quiz and a 75-question semester finalโ€”into an immediately recognizable common metric.

In American primary and secondary education, percentage scores serve as the numerical bridge between raw assignment points and official transcript letter marks (A+, A, B, C, D, F). Each primary letter bracket typically covers a 10% interval on standard grading scales.

Classroom Interpretation & Rounding

Because percentage calculations frequently produce repeating decimals (such as 26 out of 30 equal to 86.666%), teachers apply rounding conventions. Under standard academic half-up rounding, scores ending in .50 or greater round to the next higher integer (e.g., 89.5% becomes 90% A-).
